yummy yap

Yummy Yap Eating House might seem like an unassuming eatery located at a void deck, but we're telling you – it's worth the trip to Ang Mo Kio. They have an extensive menu featuring noodle and rice-based dishes, from prawn noodles to pao fan (rice with soup) and pork belly rice (lu rou fan).

The air-conditioned interior is a welcome respite from the heat, and the simple yet cosy space set the ambience for a homely meal. The eatery is run by Alan and his sister, featuring recipes passed down from their late mother.

While we were there, we tried the braised pork rice ($6), signature prawn noodles ($6) and char siew prawn dumplings noodles ($6).

Now that travel is still uncertain, it was a delight to find the braised pork rice ($6) here, which reminded us fondly of Taiwan. We were impressed with the generous topping of braised pork chunks; it was almost covering the surface of the rice! The bowl also came with a whole braised egg and cucumber slices.

We learned that the pork had been simmering for hours in a pot, evident in its deep and rich flavours. Moreover, unlike some places, the pieces given were on the thicker side, with a good ratio of fat to meat. Still, we were pleasantly surprised at how tender and melt-in-the-mouth the pork was, yum

The thick and luscious braised sauce definitely rounded up the dish, and we enjoyed savouring everything at once with a spoonful of lip-smacking pork and rice.

We also tried the dry version of the signature prawn noodles ($6), which allowed us to really taste and appreciate the ingredients and soup separately. Three whole prawns were staring right at us, and we spotted some slices of pork, fishcake, kang kong and beansprouts.

The noodles were given a good mix with the chilli and ketchup; look how nicely coated they were with the sauce! Braising sauce and pork lard were also added to the mix, so each mouthful was luscious and full of flavour.

The prawns were thoughtfully de-shelled. Fresh and firm, the large prawns really added value to the dish.

Of course, the noodles came with a side of prawn soup; it had a hint of sweetness, and was full of that rich prawn and porky flavour. Definitely a good pairing with the dry prawn noodles.

Another noodle dish we tried was the char siew prawn dumplings noodle ($6). For its price, the hefty serving of char siew and dumplings was extremely value-for-money.

Not only was there a generous amount of char siew given, but the slices were pretty thick too. Each bite was satisfyingly meaty, with an almost honey-like sweetness. And the best part? The char siew is homemade!

Can we also admire how sizeable and hefty these wantons are? They were practically the size of a golf ball!

These are homemade too, and the stuffing of fresh pork and black ear fungus made for a delicious mouthful. Portions of thick char siew and hefty wantons, what more can we ask for?

While the prices at Yummy Yap Eating House can be slightly pricier than at your neighbourhood coffee shop, the quality and portions of their dishes make up for it.
