Seng Huat Western Food

For classic western fare like chicken chop and spring chicken, Seng Huat Western Food is your go-to. They’ve also got offerings like ostrich steak if you’re feeling more adventurous.

The owner even has ex-president S.R Nathan’s stamp of approval, with a photo of him patronising the stall hung up proudly. Prices are decent as well, ranging from $4 for chicken cutlet rice to $9 for sirloin steak.

chicken chop ($6)

I tried the chicken chop ($6), and found the meat to be well-cooked and tender. The mushroom sauce and fries were rather average and underwhelming though, lacking any distinctiveness from those I tried elsewhere. The garlic bread was too light in flavour and tasted more like buttered toast.

fish and chips ($6)

Fortunately, the fish and chips ($6) saved the day. The breaded fish was absolutely delicious, being crispy on the outside and moist inside. It was perfectly seasoned too.

In fact, it could very well beat the ones you find at restaurants. For its price point, the dish is value for money.

Portions-wise, I did wish they could be slightly more generous with ingredients for both dishes. The amount of fries which came with the chicken chop as well as the fish were quite small. If you’re a big eater, you may want to order a side dish of chicken wings ($1.20 each) or pay for a bigger portion.
