Fuelled by months of taste-testing and refining, Mirzah Sweets & Pastries is founder Zafirah’s love letter to her parents. The home-based business launched in January, and offers a selection of cream puffs, eclairs, brownies, cheesecakes and cheese tarts for your picking. 

My petite box is a beautiful thing, spilling over with colours and all manner of bakes: craquelin cream puffs, eclairs, a large brownie (around the size of two loaves of mini pound cakes), and a triple berry white chocolate cheesecake.

You’re given the option to specify which flavours you’d like for the cream puffs and eclairs, so of course I’ve chosen the best of all worlds; a little of everything.

I start with the nutella puff, whose blue craquelin tops throw me off. The choux pastry, light with flaky pockets and a dense shell, is delicious in itself — and the glossy cream within is adequately fragrant with hazelnuts, bringing to mind Kinder Bueno. 

The cream cheese puff could have done with more sharply salted cheese — I’m thinking mature cheddar, for instance — to elevate it. The crackly craquelin crust is buttery goodness, but the puff’s insides are more cream than, well, cream cheese.

The eclairs follow the same theme: a mixed bag of surprises which I mostly enjoy. The hazelnut crunch option features the same piped cream as the cream puff, only with chopped hazelnuts that lack in toastiness. 

The salted caramel eclair is positively addictive with its layered flavours: the sweet and the salty, lent by toffee notes. Too bad the popcorn pieces have succumbed to moisture, rendering them excessively soft. The berries cream option is childhood in an eclair. Think strawberry ice cream, and the zippy flavours of cranberry bits thrown in the mix.

And now we get to my favourite part — the triple berry white chocolate cheesecake. 

I barely detect the white chocolate ganache drizzled over its body, but this is nonetheless one helluva cheesecake. The base is biscuity yet buttery, and complements its richer elements: fresh cream cheese, and a second layer of mixed berry cheese that’s loaded with blueberries and dried cranberries, then topped with more of the tart stuff. 

The honeycomb brownie, then, is a decadent and fudgy treat that’s strictly for serious chocolate lovers. I’ve a bone to pick about the baking chocolate used, but it wins in texture. The honeycomb brittle lifts this treat: it’s crackly with mellow caramelised notes, and adds a nice crunch to the brownie.
