Lai Pie is a home eatery that specialises in shepherd’s pies. They have two types, chicken and beef, on the menu.

The shepherd’s pies are baked to a golden crust before being sent to our doorstep, which came with a handwritten card containing comprehensive reheating instructions. We got both flavours in the small size ($18/ $20), which is enough for four (or three really hungry pals).

Both dishes are topped with mashed potato that is flavourful with a distinct milk and butter aroma. The potatoes are whipped to a fluffy consistency and well-seasoned, making it a treat. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that the beef and chicken pies were seasoned differently, so we were able to switch up our palates in between.

Now, let’s dig deeper into each pie, beginning with the beef version.

The beef shepherd’s pie comes with diced capsicums and corn. While the beef lands the main role, the vegetables add juiciness and some crunch to the dish which I enjoyed. However, the capsicums may have been distributed unevenly, leaving a stronger taste in some parts of the pie.

The chicken shepherd’s pie is seasoned rather differently. Doing away with the tomatoes, the chicken shepherd’s pie has a creamier filling. Coupled with diced button mushrooms, carrots and corn, it was a safe option that doesn't stray far from what you'd expect a competent chicken pie to taste like.

As a whole, the shepherd’s pies were tasty! However, both renditions were outshined by the (too) yummily-seasoned mash, which made it hard for the flavours of both meats to shine through. I also wished the meats were chunkier, but it's only fair to not expect wagyu-grade cuts at this affordable price point.

We shouldn’t neglect their strengths nevertheless: Lai Pie nailed the mash to filling ratio so we’re not left fighting for either component, which makes it ideal for sharing. We also loved the reheating and storage instruction note; thoughtfulness is always a nice plus when ordering from home-based eateries!

If you want a homely and comforting dish, Lai Pies also offers larger sizes up to 2.8KG ($40/ $42) serving 10 pax, which’ll save you the trouble of preparing food for small gatherings for sure.
