gu zao ren

Established in 1972, Gu Zao Ren serves Taiwanese porridge and numerous zi char-style side dishes. Their first branch was in Lau Pa Sat, and they moved to ABC in the 1990s.

In 2001, Gu Zao Ren's owners also opened a standalone restaurant at Changi Road, with both indoor and roadside seating.

The Taiwanese potato porridge is priced at $1 ber bowl, and you get unlimited refills when you order it with side dishes. The menu is really extensive too; we chose the $6 portions of chai poh omelette and minced pork with salted egg to go along with our porridge.

The porridge itself had just the right consistency, and wasn’t too thick or watery. The thick rice grains and sweet potato were well-executed too, with the sweet potato being especially soft and easy to bite into.

Though the portion was pretty small, the chai-poh omelette was well-fried and fluffy. It maintained its shape well and had a nice crunch to it, with a savoury interior. It wasn’t too greasy as well, and the seasoning was spot-on.

As for the salted egg, I liked that neither the egg nor the minced meat was overly salty. Though pricey at $6 (the portion isn’t that big either), it went particularly well with the porridge, as its flavour provided a nice contrast to the porridge’s mild taste.
