Cheng Ji

Known for their dish of pork leg bee hoon, Cheng Ji has managed to transform a simple homecooked dish into one that packs a punch. Offering a blast to the past where families could only afford to eat rice noodles, beansprouts and pork legs, the pork leg bee hoon ($5) uses canned pork legs as its star ingredient.

pork leg bee hoon

Homemade soup is poured into the wok during the frying process, allowing the noodles to soak up every bit of it. This results in a sticky, albeit a little mushy, texture. The homely dish is comforting, evoking feelings that are reminiscent of one’s childhood.

However, what is the dish’s highlight also functions as its kryptonite – the pork legs are cut into very small pieces and are few in number. The pork legs are also rather dry, despite having a good mix of lean and fatty meat, contributing little to the overall taste of the dish.

fried ee mee

The fried ee mee ($4) is served steaming hot, with the dish still smoking long after it’s served. The dish has an enticing smell and contains a variety of ingredients – small prawns, shredded egg, fishcake, vegetables – mixed within a bed of springy noodles. The dish is tasty, without being too salty or greasy.

My only grouse is that there is no wok hei aroma; however, that didn’t stop me from finishing the entire plate in no time at all. Do add some lime for some zing, together with the chilli that’s delightfully piquant.
