Even though it’s called Bangkok Express, this Thai stall has become so popular that it’s really not "express" at all. Be prepared for a wait time of 20 to 30 minutes, especially during lunch hours. But if you’re a fan of affordable Thai food, you’ll find that it’s actually quite worth your while.

The fried chicken cashew nuts set ($9) came highly recommended by a friend, but it’s not actually fried chicken per se, despite what it says on the menu. It’s cashew chicken, a Thai Chinese stir fry covered with sweet and sour sauce. It came with a side of green mango salad, sprinkled with chopped peanuts and some onions, chilli and, of course, cashews.

The chilli’s mainly there for colour though; it’s actually not that spicy, if at all. Good thing the chicken is plenty flavourful on its own.

The seafood tom yum ($7) was aromatic, rich and vibrant, with quite a bit of seafood. Four small prawns and some squid, all of which tasted really fresh and sweet, especially the squid which was quite tender. The spiciness was medium, enough to make the taste buds tingle but not too much to handle. And then some shimeji mushrooms and tomatoes for texture, and the meal is complete.

The prices might seem high for a hawker centre, but quality Thai food is a rare commodity here. It’s no wonder they’re doing such brisk business.
