Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh

#01-88 Beo Crescent Market

After a satisfying lunch from Beo Crescent Market, some tutu kueh is a perfect post-meal snack. Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh is open from 6am to 2pm from Tuesday to Sunday, so if you want to get your hands on some of their kueh, you'll have to go early.

For those not familiar with the snack, it's steamed rice flour with fillings like peanut and dessicated coconut.

You can get either one large tutu kueh for $0.80 (which sounds really novel to me!), or four standard pieces for $2.

I went for the 4 piece option, and since I couldn't decide between the two flavours available (peanut and coconut), I got both.

I liked that the steamed rice flour of the kueh generally held up quite well, and the pandan leaves made it easy to pick up, and imparted a nice fragrance.

I could very clearly see the dessicated coconut filling through the skin, and I was excited to take a bite.

Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh's filling did not disappoint; it was generous, moist and juicy. I could feel the flakes of coconut on my tongue, and the hint of sweetness was delightful.

The peanut filling was shy and hid behind the steamed rice flour, but I was still eager to get a bite.

The peanut filling was a little more spread out, and was understandably much less moist than the coconut filling. I would have enjoyed a bit more filling, or perhaps a thinner skin. Flavour-wise, I would have liked the peanuts to be sweeter for more oomph, but I enjoyed the chunky peanut paste.

If I had to choose between the two flavours from Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh, the moist and sweet coconut filling has my heart (and stomach).
